Main Street by Sinclair Lewis
100th Anniversary Edition
AudioFile Earphones Award Winner

With vocal naturalism and a wonderful feel for the author's prose, narrator Kitty Hendrix makes this first masterwork by Sinclair Lewis sound as fresh and real as the day it was published in October 1920. Through his depiction of the fictitious town of Gopher Prairie, Minnesota, Lewis offers penetrating detail, memorable characters, and wry observations. The novel captures the optimism, fierce pride, and fear of change that sometimes made small-town Midwestern life so distinct. Hendrix's nuanced portrayal of the intelligent and idealistic city girl who arrives in town ready to take on the world brings this production to another level. This audiobook shows why Carol Kennicott remains one of the most complex and fully realized female characters in American literature. B.P. Daisy Miller by Henry James
 2018 Audie Award Nominee

Narrator Kitty Hendrix deftly transports listeners to the aristocratic echelon of Europe in this 1879 classic. American Frederick Winterbourne and his Aunt Costello are at a hotel in Switzerland when he observes the beautiful young American of the title. Hendrix outdoes herself with both male characters during an amusing conversation between Daisy’s younger brother, Randolph, and Winterbourne, who is seeking to learn all about her. Hendrix's rendering of the opulent setting gives listeners a glimpse of a bygone era as Daisy dates Winterbourne and an Italian suitor named Giovanelli, which shocks almost everyone. Most aghast is Aunt Costello, who is portrayed perfectly as the old-fashioned snob she is. Class and cultural differences don’t matter to Daisy, who resents everyone's interference. Hendrix is spot-on with an array of accents, Winterbourne's and Giovanelli's reactions to Daisy, and the tragic conclusion. S.G.B. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine [Published: SEPTEMBER 2017]

Edgar Allan by John Neufeld

This audio production of a book published nearly 50 years ago could be dismissed as sounding like a teacher reading to her class. After all, Kitty Hendrix is narrating a first-person account of a preteen boy. Young Michael, who is white, recounts a few months in his family's life when they foster a black toddler named Edgar, who changes the family members' views of each other at the same time that they're judged by their small community. Hendrix's voice is mellow enough to let the text--including Michael's observations and confrontations--remain central. This is more than a middle-grade story about race. Hendrix's sensitive delivery invites thoughts about the way the family handles pressure from without--and from within--as well as the lingering questions of "difference."  "The King of Elfland's Daughter... is a tale of pure imagination. This is the real thing. It's rich red    wine, which may come as a shock if all one has had so far has been cola."  Neil Gaiman

The School Discipline Fix

by J. Stuart Ablon, Alisha R. Pollastri

x

Traditional school discipline is ineffective and often damaging, relying heavily on punishments and motivational procedures aimed at giving students the incentive to behave better. There is a better way.

The School Discipline Fix is a complete guide to a paradigm-shifting model of school discipline. Disruptive students need problem-solving skills, not punishment.'
